Moody Marsh

“Moody Marsh” | 12×12″ – pastel
$500/600 unframed/framed

Here’s a recent piece I started as a demo for the Artists in Action program at the Saratoga Springs Public Library. The program is run through a partnership of Saratoga Arts and the library to make the Arts more accessible to the public.

I’d like to thank Chris Alexander for considering me for this program. I had great fun!

It captures a marsh near Lake George on a foggy, rainy November afternoon.

Until next time…

“Dappled” | 36×36″ | Oil

Another painting inspired by the beautiful Hudson River. It will be available this month for a fundraiser to benefit the Prevention Council, a nonprofit, community-based organization working to prevent alcohol, drug, and other substance abuse throughout Saratoga County.

A portion of the sale will be donated.

Until next time…

30×48″ | Oil

I have a few upcoming shows this Fall, so it’s going to be a busy couple months in the studio. I plan on completing a few larger works, and this one is a great size. I’m calling it “Linger” because I wanted to stay and savor this amazing light at sunset on the beautiful Hudson River.

Here’s the postcard for my next group show at The Laffer Gallery titled “Nurture Nature” :
It’s so wonderful to be showing with these artists whom I admire greatly.
Please mark your calendars for the opening reception. It’s on Saturday, 9/10 from 5 – 8 PM. Hope to see you there!

Until next time…

This is the latest large oil painting completed. It has been delivered to Silverwood Gallery to replace the other large 48×48″ painting that sold there last month! Here are few pics of it in process:
From start to finish!

This is where it started. I love the looseness of this warm under-painting.

Here it is in the new studio.

Detail of the rocks.

Here it is on the wall at Silverwood Gallery in Bolton Landing, NY.

I am pleased to say that the wonderful ladies at Silverwood have found homes for my two large oils (Mountain River, 36×36 and Summer Splendor, 48×48″) in the show. I’m doing the happy dance!

Until next time…

Winter Clouds: Day 4

“Winter Clouds”
6×6″ | Pastel

Here’s my pastel for Day 4 of the 30in30 (30 Paintings in 30 Days) Art Challenge. I loved the way the cloud pattern in the sky mimicked rows of corn in a farm field.

This painting challenge has effectively shown me how to more more efficient with my work. I am finding that preparation is key, and also lots of coffee and tea ;-).

I’ll share what I’m learning in depth with a future post.

Reflections at Yaddo

8×10″ | Oil
Private collect in New York, NY

Here’s the painting I completed Friday afternoon at Yaddo during my private workshop.
Some pointers on painting reflections.

  • Careful observation is always key to improving your paintings. Take your time to view how the water interacts with light, and surrounding objects.
  • Reflected sky light will always appear darker in the water.
  • Reflected dark objects, like trees, figures, etc. will appear lighter/duller in appearance.
  • Your reflected edges will appear fuzzier and lighter than the reflected shadows directly by the shoreline.
