Cohoes Falls Study

Here’s a study of an early spring view of Cohoes Falls on the Mohawk River; the second largest waterfall in New York state.
A friend of mine took me on a little tour of the falls and the town of Cohoes the other day (Thanks, NMS). I learned a cool fact about the falls - A prehistoric mastadon (woolly mammoth) was found there back in the 1800s!! The mammoth is now being displayed at the New York State museum. I think that’s so cool.

This study is already sold, but I plan on completing a couple larger versions in the near future.

I visited Frederick Church’s Olana estate for the first time a few weeks ago. Although it was an overcast day with snow on the horizon, the view of the Hudson and the Catskill mountains was still breathtaking.

The Hudson

Here’s a wider version of the same view looking up the Hudson River towards the falls. This stretch of the Hudson is so different from what most people imagine when they think of the river. Here it’s the more narrow, meandering, tree-lined Hudson compared to the large expansive, pier lined Hudson closer to NYC.

I’ve been thinking of spring/summer and being out on the Hudson. This is a view looking up the river towards one of the many waterfalls which are usually found by the Locks. I think I may do a larger version of this piece some day.

Here’s a commission that I have been working on for a few weeks now. It is a gift from a client in Texas to her parents for their 50th anniversary. The house is close by, so I was able to take some pictures of it and meet the owners. They were absolutely wonderful! The kind of people whom after speaking with for 5 minutes, you feel as though you’ve known them forever.

The house is beautiful, both outside and in. It sits on a little hill that overlooks the Hudson River.
The little pooch in the painting is their beloved dog, Grace who is no longer with us. The owners wanted to include her in the painting, because she was a special part of their family and home. Here’s a close up of her:

Needless to say, I am very happy and honored that I was chosen to do this painting. It not only provided a wonderful challenge, but it also brought new friends. Thank you!
